The ASOCAFE cooperative is located in the Yungas region of western Bolivia, known for its lush, tree-covered mountains nestled in deep river valleys. It is one of the most visually stunning areas in coffee-producing countries. However, poor infrastructure, limited technical know-how, and a lack of resources hinder Bolivia from becoming a go-to for high-quality coffee specialty. Unlike many neighbouring cooperatives, whose members process cherries at the farm level, ASOCAFE has two centralised mills where members collectively contribute to better quality control. The cherries were harvested between October and November at 1,500–1,900 m above sea level. Although ASOCAFE has 280 members, this particular lot comes from 15 families, each with approximately 1–5 hectares of land. After manual harvesting, the cherries are transported to the lower parts of the mountains, to one of the wet mills, where they are further processed. Before export, the processed beans are manually sorted and stored in El Alto, thanks to the dry and cool climate.
